At the time of Dan's death in February 2009, he was serving as Chairman of the Building Restoration and Improvement Committee ("BRIC") of Central Christian Church. This effort brought together three of Dan's great passions and interests outside of that for his family:
- Church - Dan embodied Christ's teachings through his tireless dedication and involvement in the life of Central Christian Church, serving as 4-term Chairman of the Board, Sunday School Teacher, choir member, and Elder. Additionally, his work as Chair of BRIC allowed him to be an active participant in the movement to restore the Church that he so dearly loved.
- History - Dan had an abiding love of history, and he so appreciated that Central Christian Church has an impressive one. The congregation was originally formed in 1847, over one hundred and fifty years ago. The church's current home, which Dan was working to restore, opened its doors in 1929, during the first year of the Great Depression. The building was designed by the Chairman of the Department of Architecture at the University of Texas.
- Community - In addition to his work at Central Christian Church, Dan was an active volunteer in the community. Through his involvement in several organizations, Dan touched the lives of many. His volunteerism was always performed selflessly, with a gracious, loving and generous spirit. Dan envisioned and wanted the restored structure of Central Christian Church - a crown jewel of the Austin Downtown community - to continue to serve as a focal gathering point for both worship and community-based activities.
Memorial Dedication
Central Christian Church, with the support of Dan's family, resolved to dedicate this historic effort to Dan's memory, as this restoration project personified the core of Dan's character and spiritual being.
We would like to inform you, Church members, Dan's friends, and the greater community that he so faithfully served, of this dedication and extend an invitation to assist and financially participate in the completion of the restoration project in memory of Dan T. Richards.
