Health & Wellness from Carol

It has been my pleasure serving as your Faith Community Nurse this past year.

I’ve been told it takes at least two years for the program to develop. I look forward to sharing this experience with all of you.

This past year, I completed my American Heart Association CPR instructor course.
This certification enables me to teach CPR/AED and First Aid classes to the general public and BLS courses to healthcare personnel.

I also completed a Faith Community Nursing Certification Course through Western Kentucky University.
This course along with my years of nursing experience, has provided me a solid foundation on which to build our faith community nursing program.

Last year, We had CPR and first aid classes for the congregation.
This year, I am going to try breaking them into smaller segments at no charge. I’d like to try and add these to the monthly, “Wellness Sunday” classes in the parlor after church service. These programs will last thirty minutes to an hour. If someone needs a certification, I’ll gladly set one up.

This year we had two, Wellness Sunday programs in the parlor, one on mental health issues with Katie Gates, LMFT, and one on dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse with Wayne Johnson and Arza Demi. Both of these sessions were a success. It’s wonderful to access the knowledge and talent of the people within our church community.

I will continue my monthly health and wellness articles in the newsletter. This will be a one page article on the health challenges we face daily.

We participated in six organizational walks this past year.
They are a lot of fun. You get a little exercise, make new friends, and collect money for a good cause. These walks also bring awareness to the public about the devastating effects of these illnesses. I’m not sure how many walks we will sign up for this year, but let’s plan on coming together Sunday, February 25 at 2:30 pm to help stamp out hunger by participating in Austin’s annual CROP walk. I am looking forward to participating in joint programs with other local Disciples of Christ congregations.
